Accommodation and Healthcare: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for June 2024

As we dive into the most in-demand and most searched-for occupations in Windsor-Essex for June 2024, we want to highlight an update in our data framework. This series will now use the 2021 National Occupational Classification (NOC) codes from Statistics Canada, replacing the previously-used 2016 NOC codes. This change impacts the names of some occupations, such as Retail Salepersons now being Retail Salespersons and Visual Merchandisers. Overall, the 2021 NOC codes introduce a more refined categorization system, better reflecting the evolving landscape of the job market and emerging industries. This update ensures that our analysis is both current and comprehensive, providing you with the most accurate and relevant information on the leading career opportunities in Windsor-Essex.

In June 2024, there were 6,317 total active job postings from 2,185 companies for an increase of 8% in total active job postings from the previous month. The number of new job postings decreased this month, however, down 10% from May, with 2,790 new jobs posted in the month of June. The Job Board received 23,475 job post clicks, down 8% from the previous month.

Occupations that saw a significant increase in interactions on the Job Board in June as compared to May include Material Handlers (up 26.5%); Janitors, Caretakers and Building Superintendents (up 18.7%); Administrative Assistants (up 17.6%); Home Support Workers, Caretakers and Related Occupations (up 14.7%); and Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations (up 13.2%).

Occupations that saw a significant decrease in interactions on the Job Board in June as compared to May include Transport Truck Drivers (down 40.8%); Receptionists (down 27.4%); Other Labourers in Processing, Manufacturing and Utilities (down 26.2%); Administrative Officers (down 22.7%); and Retail Salespersons and Visual Merchandisers (down 10.3%).

Similar to what we saw on the demand side in May, June also saw significant increases in total active job postings in many occupations as compared to the previous month. These occupations include Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations (up 44.4%); Administrative Assistants (up 40.9%); Mechanical Engineers (up 30.1%); Food Service Supervisors (up 27.9%); and Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers (up 26.0%).

The only occupation that saw a decrease in demand on the top 20 in-demand occupations list in Windsor-Essex for June, as compared to May, was Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics, down 15.3% from the previous month, however, this occupation is still very much in-demand.

Looking at the most searched-for and most in-demand jobs for the region in June, the occupations seeing both increases in searches and in demand include Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations; Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers; Material Handlers; Administrative Assistants; Home Support Workers, Caregivers and Related Occupations; Medical Administrative Assistants; and Cooks.

Top Growing Occupations

In addition to looking at the most in-demand occupations month over month, we can also examine what occupations have risen most over the past year.

From the above table, we can see the continued rise in demand for a couple occupations that are part of the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector (Medical Administrative Assistants and Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses). This list is a great resource to find trends, and as a piece of a larger picture of the most in-demand occupations in the region that have been increasing over a longer period of time.

The Healthcare and Social Assistance sector has seen much grown in the region in recent months. In the first half of 2024, the Healthcare and Social Assistance has been the top hiring sector in Windsor-Essex three times, second twice, and third once. As compared to the same month last year, the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector has seen a 46% increase in total active job postings, from 667 in June 2023 to 974 in June 2024.

The sector that saw the most increase in demand as compared to May (not including Mining, Quarrying, and Oil and Gas Extraction and Management of Companies and Enterprises, as their numbers are rather low to begin with) was the Accommodation and Food Services sector, with a 23.6% increase in total active job postings. As compared to the same month last year, this sector has seen a 33.2% increase in total active job postings from 389 in June 2023 to 518 in June 2024. This can be attributed to the increase in job postings for Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations; Cooks; and Food Service Supervisors. This sector also benefits from the warmer weather, with patio season and increased tourism, as well as from students who are off for the summer.

From the above list of hiring employers, we can see where some of the job postings from the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector are coming from (Windsor Regional Hospital, whose job postings are up 19.6% from 184 in May to 220 in June, and Extendicare Canada, whose job postings are up 20% from 35 in May to 42 in June). We can also see where some hiring in the Accommodation and Food Services sector is coming from (Subway and McDonald’s Corporation).
