Healthcare and Insurance: Top Occupations and In-Demand Jobs for Windsor-Essex for May 2024

This month, we saw increases in demand for the majority of the top occupations in Windsor-Essex, and even saw a new occupation that typically does not get much attention on the top in-demand occupations list. Job postings, total and new, were up, as were the number of interactions from jobseekers on the Job Board, indicating that employers are looking to hire and jobseekers are eager to fill those spots.

In May 2024, there were 5,867 total active job postings from 2,043 companies for an increase of 11% in total active job postings from the previous month. The number of new job postings increased this month as well, up 9% from April, with 3,108 new jobs posted in the month of May. The Job Board received 25,553 job post clicks, up 2% from the previous month.

Occupations that saw a significant increase in interactions on the Job Board in May as compared to April include Administrative Officers (up 53.6%); Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations (up 41.3%); Transport Truck Drivers (up 36.5%); and Construction Trades Helpers and Labourers (up 14.7%).

Occupations that saw a significant decrease in interactions on the Job Board in May as compared to April include Administrative Assistants (down 44.9%); Light Duty Cleaners (down 32.6%); Material Handlers (down 28.8%); Janitors, Caretakers and Building Superintendents (down 25.1%); and Other Customer and Information Services Representatives (down 19.5%).

May saw significant increases in total active job postings for a few occupations, as compared to the previous month, including Registered Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses (up 98.8%), Electrical and Electronics Engineers (up 28.4%), Insurance Agents and Brokers (up 28.3%), Administrative Officers (up 28.0%), and Mechanical Engineers (up 24.1%).

Very few occupations in the above table saw decreases in demand in May as compared to April, but they include Material Handlers (down 9.4%), Food and Beverage Servers (down 2.7%), and Administrative Assistants (down 1.5%).

Over the past four months, we’ve seen a consistent increase in demand for specific types of engineers in Windsor-Essex (Electrical and Electronics, Mechanical, and Industrial and Manufacturing). We’ve also seen increases in demand for Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses, but this may be the most drastic increase in recent months.

New on the in-demand occupations list for May is Insurance Agents and Brokers, which sell life, automobile, property, health, and other types of insurance to individuals, businesses, and public institutions. Insurance Agents are employed by individual insurance companies or are independent representatives of specific insurance companies. Insurance Brokers are employed by brokerage firms, or may work in partnerships or hold sole proprietorship. Supervisors of insurance agents are included in this group. Regional employers for Insurance Agents and Brokers include Hub International, NFP Corp, Desjardins Group / Mouvement Desjardins, Billyard Insurance Group, and Ives Insurance.

In terms of overlap in what employers are hiring for as compared to what jobseekers are searching for on the Job Board, the occupations seeing increases in both demand and in searches include Retail Salespersons; Transport Truck Drivers; Food Counter Attendants, Kitchen Helpers and Related Support Occupations; Administrative Officers; and Store Shelf Stockers, Clerks and Order Fillers.

In looking at hiring by 2-digit NAICS, job postings for the Healthcare and Social Assistance sector continued to be the top hiring sector in Windsor-Essex, which would account for the small increase in job postings for Home Support Workers, Housekeepers and Related Occupations (up 5.3% in May as compared to April) and the significant increase in Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (up 98.8% in May as compared to April). The Finance and Insurance sector also saw an increase in job postings in May, attributable to the increase in demand for Insurance Agents and Brokers. Retail Trade was the second-most hiring sector in Windsor-Essex for May, which is consistent with Retail Salespersons being the most in-demand occupation for the region, even increasing 16.8% in the amount of job postings for that occupation in May from the previous month.
